When we’re young it seems like faster is better, but in time we witness the power of “slow and steady” at work. We come to learn that no act of love, kindness or generosity – no matter how small – is ever wasted. The fact that you can plant a seed and it becomes a flower, share a bit of knowledge and it becomes a book, smile at someone and receive a smile in return, is proof that YOU can make a big difference in life and in your profession, even it can’t be done all at once.

The Monetary Value of Winning an Award
    By Robert Jacob

As a new author, I was extremely excited to learn about the FAPA President’s Book Awards. Enthusiastic about completing my first book, I was certain that it would win something, and I was expecting to receive recognition from professionals in the publishing industry. However, winning an award goes far beyond personal recognition and self-gratification. When I entered the contest, I had no idea that another benefit of winning an award would be an increase in book sales.

Each year, the FAPA President’s Book Awards program officially recognizes book publishing excellence and creativity in design, content, and production for authors and publishers. Finalists are chosen by publishing professionals, librarians, and members of educational institutions. The winners are announced at the President’s Book Awards Banquet at the FAPA annual conference, which is held at the end of July or the beginning of August.

The first clue that winning an award would equate to monetary gain came from my daughter. It was December 2018, and I had just entered my first book in several categories. My daughter was about to graduate from UCF with a degree in education and we were shopping for children’s books that she intended to use in her classroom. After passing one book after another, I asked her what she was looking for. She replied that she doesn’t buy any book that hasn’t won an award. She was looking for an award-winning sticker on the cover.

Sure enough, my book won a gold and two silver medals. I immediately placed those stickers on my display books at numerous book fairs and events over the following two years. Browsers looking at my book would be attracted to the stickers, comment on the awards, and even ask about how I achieved them. In most cases, they inevitably purchased a copy. It is noticeably clear that winning a FAPA award equates to far more book sales.
