Meet Member John “Luke” Lucarell, Author of It Only Gets Funnier

John "Luke" Lucarell
Harbormaster, Bluewater cruiser and author
I grew up in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and enjoyed the small-town atmosphere and the friends I made along the way. I moved to Florida, and I have been most fortunate to be associated as harbourmaster with Monroe Harbour Marina in Sanford since 1971. My staff was instrumental in making Monroe Harbour the first marina in the State of Florida to earn Clean Marina, Boatyard, and Marine Retailer Designations.
Throughout my years at the marina, I also served as ship?s captain aboard the Bay Queen, Star of Sanford, Rivership Romance, Grand Romance, and the Barbara Lee.
Published my first book titled ?It Only Gets Funnier? after a recent yacht delivery from West Palm Beach to South America. On a return trip from Panama a few months later, we encountered inclement weather to a pirate scare off Honduras. The adventures were unnerving but at the same time too hilarious not to write about it.
Currently working on two book projects: ?46 Years? a comical biography of my career at the marina and the novel ?Impetuous Landing? that will take you aboard an American salvage vessel during a hurricane.
John ?Luke? Lucarell started Bluewater and river boating in November 1971, and over the years, he?s enjoyed plenty of adventures.
He shares the most exciting and entertaining ones in this book chronicling his trips, many of which included his good friends Kevin and Shawn. The three met while they worked on dinner boats cruising the St. Johns River from Sanford, Florida, during the 1980s.
In the spring of 1984, he joined several friends in chartering three Morgan sailboats to the Bahamas. Of the twelve people in his party, only four knew how to sail, and they were all in the same boat! With no experience, the intrepid eight had to figure out how to sail. What could possibly go wrong?
On a trip from Central America to Florida, he encountered everything from inclement weather to a pirate scare off of Honduras. Four skiffs approached the boat, and the captain had to make evasive maneuvers.
