My fifth and last self-reinvention is as a novelist. I've been an engineer, a businessman and entrepreneur, a Peace Corps country director and a non-profit executive.

The Siren of Good Intentions

Sunrise came well after the roosters crowed. The vehicle fumes and the clank of rail work awoke us earlier than we intended. But waking once again at 4:30am seemed now just routine - even if none of us actually arose from our cots until after 6.
We finished breakfast, broke camp and packed the Land Rover as efficiently as we had in Dakar. We headed into Mahina for additional provisions and to visit Chief Swaray.
The constable was easy to locate. Mahina has one main street. It had been paved once upon a time but now was a wreck of dirt, rocks and holes. On either side of us were dark cinder block buildings, saturated with moss and mold. Round, black trucks, Russian or Chinese manufacture, rumbled by carrying cement, wood and charcoal.
